Hi, I’m Dr Lorna Kerr, a Clinical Psychologist providing online EMDR therapy for anxiety and PTSD. If you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed and are looking for some support to help you feel calmer and more grounded, you’re in the right place.

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychological therapy that helps with difficulties including anxiety, phobias and trauma. The psychology behind EMDR is that emotional difficulties are the result of unprocessed or blocked memories from the past.

EMDR works by activating both hemispheres of the brain, enhancing the natural healing ability of the mind. This healing and processing achieved through EMDR therapy can lead to a dramatic and speedy improvement in many aspects of your life.

  • During an EMDR session, you experience something called Bilateral Stimulation. Bilateral stimulation is stimuli (visual, auditory or tactile) that occur in a rhythmic left-right pattern. For example, visual bilateral stimulation could involve watching a dot or a light moving from left to right and back again. Auditory bilateral stimulation might involve listening to tones that switch between the left and right sides of the head.

During an EMDR session, you will remain in control, fully alert and awake. It is not like hypnosis. You can stop the process at any time. Throughout the session, I will support and facilitate your own self-healing and  guide you only when needed. Reprocessing is usually experienced as something that happens spontaneously, and new connections and insights arise in a seemingly natural way. As the process feels so intuitive, many people experience EMDR as an empowering therapy.

Online EMDR Therapy for PTSD

EMDR has been extensively researched and is recommended by the World Health Organisation and the NICE guidelines in the UK as a first line treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is an anxiety disorder and EMDR is highly effective for anxiety that is caused by past trauma or difficult experiences.

Neuroscience and psychology have shown us that traumatic experiences are encoded and stored in the brain in a different way to non-traumatic memories.

During a traumatic experience, the part of the brain that normally processes experiences goes offline. Trauma memories are therefore ‘unprocessed’ and are easily activated by subtle cues/reminders of the event. When this happens, you may feel ‘triggered’, as if you are reliving the trauma. For many

EMDR Therapy helps with this by allowing your brain to process the traumatic memory and anxiety in a very natural way, helping you to break free from PTSD and no longer experience being triggered in the same way.

EMDR Therapy for Complex PTSD

I provide specialist attachment-informed EMDR therapy for Complex Trauma. Attachment-informed EMDR provides a calming, soothing and regulating emotional experience that can help you to repair attachment wounds from childhood, process and release past trauma, and increase your resources and coping skills in the here and now.

Online EMDR Therapy with an Experienced Psychologist

Many clients tell me that they prefer online EMDR therapy as they feel most comfortable doing therapy from their own home. Online EMDR is very similar to in person EMDR. All you need is your laptop, a quiet and confidential space to talk and a decent internet connection.

During your online session I will guide you through the process of EMDR bilateral stimulation (e.g., tapping, eye movements or sounds), just as I would in an in-person session.  The only difference is that you will be in your own space, with the option to choose a comfortable position and have any items nearby that you find soothing.

I use a virtual EMDR platform that is easy to use. You simply click on a link in an email from me, and the session will open, just like a Zoom meeting. You will be able to choose from different forms of Bilateral Stimulation (e.g., tapping, eye movements, or sounds), similar to how you would in an in-person EMDR session.
